How it works

The three formulas differ only in their numbers. Each adds a set number of kilograms per inch above 60 inches to a base weight for your sex. The range runs from the lowest result to the highest. This female page uses 18 inches over the 60 inch base, at 6 ft 6 in.

Worked example

Say a woman is 6 ft 6 in tall. Height over 60 is 18 inches. The three results are 45.5 + 2.3 × 18 = 86.9 kg, 49 + 1.7 × 18 = 79.6 kg and 53.1 + 1.36 × 18 = 77.58 kg. In pounds they are 192 lb, 175 lb and 171 lb. The lowest and highest give a range of 171 to 192 lb.

Common questions

Do these formulas account for muscle or frame size?

No. They use only height and sex. Someone with a large frame or a lot of muscle can be healthy well above the range. For a woman at 6 ft 6 in the range of 171 to 192 lb is a starting point, not a limit.

Is 171 to 192 lb a target I must hit?

No. It is a starting reference for a woman at 6 ft 6 in. Your doctor can tell you what weight suits your own health. For a woman at 6 ft 6 in the range spans 21 lb.

What if I am under 5 feet tall?

The formulas were written for heights of 5 feet and over. Below that the calculator uses the base weight. Treat the result as rough. For a woman at 6 ft 6 in the formulas add 18 inches above the 60 inch base.

How does this compare with BMI?

A healthy BMI range also gives a weight range for your height. The two often overlap but they are not the same, because BMI ignores sex while these formulas use it. For a woman at 6 ft 6 in a healthy BMI is 160 to 215 lb, against 171 to 192 lb here.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

None is better than the others. They were built for different purposes. Showing all three as a range is more honest than picking one. For a woman at 6 ft 6 in the three results are 192 lb, 175 lb and 171 lb.
