How it works

Devine, Robinson and Miller each start from a base weight at 60 inches and add a set number of kilograms for every inch above 60. The page runs all three and shows the lowest and highest as your range. This male page uses 18 inches over the 60 inch base, at 6 ft 6 in.

Worked example

Take a man who is 6 ft 6 in tall. That is 18 inches over 60. Devine: 50 + 2.3 × 18 = 91.4 kg, or 202 lb. Robinson: 52 + 1.9 × 18 = 86.2 kg, or 190 lb. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 × 18 = 81.58 kg, or 180 lb. The range is 180 to 202 lb.

Common questions

How does this compare with BMI?

A healthy BMI range also gives a weight range for your height. The two often overlap but they are not the same, because BMI ignores sex while these formulas use it. For a man at 6 ft 6 in a healthy BMI is 160 to 215 lb, against 180 to 202 lb here.

Which ideal weight formula is best?

None is better than the others. They were built for different purposes. Showing all three as a range is more honest than picking one. For a man at 6 ft 6 in the three results are 202 lb, 190 lb and 180 lb.

Why do the formulas give different answers?

Each uses its own base weight and its own amount per inch. The gap grows as height moves away from 5 feet. For a man at 6 ft 6 in the gap between the lowest and highest is 22 lb.

Do these formulas account for muscle or frame size?

No. They use only height and sex. Someone with a large frame or a lot of muscle can be healthy well above the range. For a man at 6 ft 6 in the range of 180 to 202 lb is a starting point, not a limit.

Is 180 to 202 lb a target I must hit?

No. It is a starting reference for a man at 6 ft 6 in. Your doctor can tell you what weight suits your own health. For a man at 6 ft 6 in the range spans 22 lb.
